This polymorph was found to display four optimized structures namely VO2(B)PP, VO2(B)LP, VO2(B)PPD, and VO2(B)LPD using the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) PBE exchange-correlation functional by including/excluding van der Waals interaction. Our derivation provides a theoretical justification for adding an on-site Coulomb U value in the conventional DFT calculations to allow a direct comparison of the two methods. We predicted a zero bandgap of the VO2(B) structure based on GGA/PBE. However, by GGA/PBE + U, we found accurate bandgap values of 0.76, 0.66, and 0.70 eV for VO2(B)PP, VO2(B)LP, and VO2(B)PPD, respectively. The results obtained from DFT + U were accompanied by a structural transition from the metallic to semiconductor property. Here, we verified the non-magnetic characteristic of the monoclinic VO2(B) phase with some available experimental and theoretical data. However, the debate on the magnetic property of this polymorph remains unresolved. Imaginary and real parts of the dielectric function, as computed with the GGA/PBE functional and the GGA/PBE + U functional, were also reported. The first absorption peaks of all considered geometries in the imaginary part of the dielectric constants indicated that the VO2(B) structure could perfectly absorb infrared light. The computed static dielectric constants with positive values, as derived from the optical properties, confirmed the conductivity of this material. Among the four proposed geometries of VO2(B) in this study, the outcomes obtained by VO2(B)PPD reveal good results owing to the excellent consistency of its bandgap, magnetic and optical properties with other experimental and theoretical observations. Inst. for R&#x26;D in Microtechnologies, Romania)</p>\n<p><strong>Title</strong>: Design of a 24-GHz dual-polarized rectenna integrated on silicon</p>\n<p><strong>Abstract</strong>: This paper presents the design of an integrated and differential rectenna on silicon, operating at 24 GHz. The antenna is dual-polarized and composed by four patches on a synthetized low effective permittivity dielectric. The substrate is a structure composed of three layers of high-resistivity silicon (εr=11.9) where the central layer has an air cavity equal to the dimensions of the antennas. The feeding solution is performed by planar microstrip lines with inset feeds. A shunt configuration was chosen for the rectifiers with GaAs diodes. The silicon substrate assures the complete integration for on-chip systems and despite the lossy material chosen as substrate, each patch antenna presents 83% of radiation efficiency with a maximum gain of 4.82 dBi. Costanzo (UniBO)</p>\n<p><strong>Title</strong>: Design of a 24-GHz dual-polarized rectenna integrated on silicon</p>\n<p><strong>Abstract</strong>: This paper presents the analysis and design of on-Silicon dielectric resonator antennas (DRAs) for energy harvesting applications. The proposed antennas, operating at 24 GHz and excited through a simple microstrip line, are built on a high-resistivity silicon substrate 0.525 mm-thick. The design of cylindrical and rectangular resonators using sapphire as dielectric material is first described, leading to 80% of maximum radiation efficiency and gain equal to 5.15 dBi. Given the increasing attention to system-on-a-chip (SoC) circuits, the second study proposed in this paper aims to a complete integrated solution, describing all-Silicon DRAs, both in cylindrical and rectangular shapes. Very promising performances are obtained in this case, too, from the twofold point of view of compactness and efficiency (75% radiation efficiency and gain equal to 4.72 dBi), if compared to standard solutions on Silicon. As a last step of the proposed study, an investigation on the miniaturization of DRAs operating at millimeter waves is described, exploiting high permittivity materials. Costanzo (UniBO)</p>\n<p><strong>Title</strong>: On-Silicon efficient integrated DRAs for millimeter-wave energy harvesting solutions</p>\n<p><strong>Abstract</strong>: This paper presents preliminary results of dielectric resonator antennas (DRAs), exploiting silicon, as possible candidates for compact energy harvesting system fully integrated on silicon. The antennas are designed to operate at 24 GHz using a 0.525-mm thick high resistivity silicon substrate. Different shapes and solutions are considered: first cylindrical and cuboid elements are characterized under the HEM 11δ hybrid mode excitation and promising performance are demonstrated with a very good compromise between compactness and radiation performance: for a DRA with a volume as low as 7 mm 3 , a radiation efficiency of 75% and a maximum gain of 4.72 dBi have been obtained. Subsequently, a millimeter-wave rectenna, based on the proposed DRA, is designed, providing an RF-to-dc conversion efficiency of 33% for a received power of 8 dBm, with a maximum output dc voltage of about 3V. Based on these designs a fully integrated 2 x 2 silicon array is realized, for enhancing the energy harvesting capabilities in the mmWave range, while preserving the compactness of the entire system. In this case, the maximum gain of the antenna is equal to 7.3 dBi with a radiation efficiency equal to 60%.</p>\n<p><strong>Published in</strong>: <a Pierantoni (UnivPM)</p>\n<p><strong>Title</strong>: Reconfigurable radiofrequency circuits based on ferroelectric materials</p>\n<p><strong>Abstract</strong>: We will present the main state-of-the-art solutions based on ferroelectric materials, which include devices such as energy harvesters, low-power detectors, radiofrequency (RF) filters, antenna arrays and so on. The use of devices made using ferroelectric materials have significant advantages over traditional tunable devices based on semiconductors. Ferroelectric devices have considerably superior tuning capability to semiconductor-based competitors, moreover ferroelectric devices do not present forward bias conduction, a problem that becomes very present in semiconductor solutions when the input signal has high power.\nOne of the main goals of the workshop will also be to provide a detailed analysis on the properties, design rules, electromagnetic simulations of ferroelectric materials and non-linear modelling procedures, with particular attention to nanoscale solutions also compatible with modern CMOS
